HPC.NRW

The establishment of the HPC competence network HPC.NRW is one of the first steps of a state-wide HPC strategy as part of the digitalization initiative of North Rhine-Westphalia (DH-NRW).

It offers a competent and broad point of contact and consulting for scientfic HPC users in NRW and provides the basis to combine the expertise of the larger HPC centers (Tier-2) with services of smaller (Tier-3) centers. The common goal is a more effective and efficient use of high performance computing and data storage systems, and to support early career scientists in their HPC-related research. In addition, HPC.NRW also allows computing centers to support each other in the operation of ever more complex HPC systems.

The HPC/A Lab, as part of the Digital Science Center, is the central local point of contact for these topics at the University of Bonn, where it also aims to foster networks and collaborations within the university and with associated partners. HPC.NRW provides the central super-regional network infrastructure. The intense discussion between the different HPC centers in NRW supports and initiates the optimization of local processes on the one hand, and offers new synergies and opportunities for collaboration on the other. The HPC/A-Lab strives to make these opportunities accessible for the active HPC users and operators at our university and to inform them about general developments as well as new opportunities for collaborations.

The competence network encompasses the universities of Aachen (RWTH), Bielefeld, Bochum, Bonn, Dortmund, Duisburg-Essen, Düsseldorf, Köln (Cologne), Münster,  Paderborn, Siegen, and Wuppertal.

The tasks and aims of the projects have been initially organised in four work packages (AP):

AP 1: Coordination and Public Relations
AP 2: Consulting, Courses, Tutorials, Workshops
AP 3: Coordination of Software Environments, Systems Operation
AP 4: Structured Access to HPC Ressources

The University of Bonn participates in particularly in work packages 2 and 3. Besides actors from the HRZ and HPC/A Lab, also other members of the university are welcome to contribute to the network. Let us know if you are interested!

A central coordination office for HPC.NRW is further available at RWTH Aachen University which also provides some more information on its website.

Moreover, there is a presentation available on YouTube that gives a comprehensive overview over the here only indicated structures and aims of HPC.NRW.
